UNDATED (WHTC) -- Memorial Day originated after the Civil War to honor both Union and Confederate soldiers who had died. It is now a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving in all U.S. wars. Many people visit memorials and cemeteries. Several parades on Memorial Day along the Lakeshore end with ceremonies at local cemeteries. The Zeeland Parade begins at 9 a.m. and is followed by a ceremony at the Lincoln Street Cemetery. The parade in Holland gets started at 9:30 a.m. ending with a memorial at Pilgrim Home Cemetery. Parades are also scheduled in Saugatuck and Jenison.
