PARK TWP., MI (WHTC) - The dangers of diving off of the Holland State Park Pier were again reinforced with the death of a 17-year-old Holland-area man.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff's Sergeant Cal Keuning, Jose Moreno and a friend had jumped off of the pier shortly after 6 PM last night, and while the friend was able to scramble back to the pier, Moreno began to flounder in about 20 feet of water. The friend tossed one life ring into the water, but the victim failed to reach it; by the time a second ring was thrown, Moreno went under. Divers using a small robot equipped with sonar, lights and cameras spotted the victim around 8 PM and rushed him to Holland Hospital, where attempts to revive him failed, and Moreno, a senior at West Ottawa High School, was pronounced dead around 10:30 PM.
Authorities have continually cautioned residents and visitors to not use that pier as a platform to dive into the waters, citing various dangers concerning rocks, rip currents and water depths.
