Tigers and Cubs Win, Griffins Facing Elimination

UNDATED (WHTC) -- Miguel Cabrera went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a solo homer to power the Tigers in a 6-1 win over the Red Sox at Fenway Park.  Ian Kinsler, Torii Hunter and Alex Avila also knocked in runs while Rick Porcello pitched eight innings of one-run ball to improve to 7-and-1.  Detroit has now won five straight.  The Tigers go for the sweep tonight on 1450 WHTC at 7:40 P.M.

Edwin Jackson struck out 11 over seven shutout innings as the Cubs blanked the Brewers 3-0 at Wrigley Field.  Jackson allowed four hits and walked one to improve to 3-and-3.  Hector Rondon closed it out for his fourth save.  Starlin Castro doubled in a run in the first and scored on Wellington Castillo's two-run double to account for all the runs as Chicago ended a three-game slide.  The Cubs and Brewers take the field at Wrigley this afternoon.

Hector Noesi allowed six runs in six-plus innings and fell to 0-and-4 for Chicago.  Gordon Beckham and Alexei Ramirez each had two hits and an RBI for the Sox, who have lost five out of seven.  The set’s rubber match takes place this afternoon in Houston.


The Whitecaps fell to the Lake County Captains on Saturday, 5-2.  The Whitecaps took a 2-1 lead in the third inning and held it into the eighth before Lake County rallied against the bullpen.  An eighth-inning grand slam by Grant Fink was the decisive blow the chances of a Whitecap win.  The ‘Caps face the Captains this afternoon.  Coverage on 1450 WHTC and whtc.com begins at 12:50 P.M.


The Blackhawks have been waiting since Tuesday night to begin the Western Conference finals today.  The Los Angeles Kings are in Chicago to face the Blackhawks this afternoon at the United Center.  It will be a rematch of last year's Western Conference finals, which the Blackhawks won in five games.


The Grand Rapids Griffins are facing elimination in their quest for this year’s Calder Cup as they are down in their series against the Texas Stars, 3-2.  The Griffins are faced with the challenge of winning consecutive games at the Cedar Park Center, where the Stars haven’t lost two straight since February.  But, the defending Calder Cup champions have never lost an elimination game under Coach Jeff Blashill, going 2-0 when a loss means going home.  Game 6 takes place this evening and if a Game 7 is required, it will would take place Monday in Texas.


NASCAR News: Jamie McMurray won Saturday night's NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race and collected $1 million after passing Carl Edwards for the lead with nine laps to go and then holding off Kevin Harvick at the finish.  Next week’s Coca-Cola 600 takes place at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
