AUBURN HILLS (WKZO) -- Chrysler Group is reporting an operating loss in the first quarter of the year. Despite higher sales of SUV's and pickups, the automaker needed to pay one time charges that led to a 690-million dollar loss.

Charges included a 504-million dollar payment related to the United Auto Workers Retiree Benefits Trust. They also incurred a 672-million dollar charge to continue support of the Chrysler World Class Manufacturing program with the UAW which trains workers to be efficient.

Overall, the special charges the automaker paid in the first quarter were over 1.2-billion dollars.
