Michigan gay marriage ban remains in place after Appeals Court ruling

The Voters of Michigan approved the ban on Gay Marriage, putting it into the State Constitution in 2004.
The Voters of Michigan approved the ban on Gay Marriage, putting it into the State Constitution in 2004.

CINCINNATI, OH (WTVB) - The temporary judicial stop to gay marriages in Michigan will now continue indefinitely.  A majority of a three-judge panel on the Sixth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals yesterday extended its stay on U.S. District Court Judge Bernard Friedman's ruling that resulted in a couple hundred same-sex marriages last Saturday.

Michigan Governor Rick Snyder says the effort in court to maintain a 2004 ban on gay marriage is not up to him.  Friedman found Michigan's amendment unconstitutional after a two-week trial, but the Cincinnati-based higher court cited an injunction in a similar Utah case to institute a hold on matters.
