KALAMAZOO (WHTC/WKZO) - For the second time this academic year, a female college student from Ottawa County was found dead in her room on or near campus.
Alyssa Olafson was discovered in Western Michigan University's Eicher Hall at 1:21 AM after suffering what was initially diagnosed as an apparent cardiac arrest, and emergency responders were not able to revive her. An autopsy was done at Lansing's Sparrow Hospital, though determining the exact cause of her death could take several weeks due to customary delays in toxicology test results. The 19-year-old Allendale High School graduate was a pre-health and human service's major in her first year at WMU, making the Dean's List in her first semester on campus last fall.
A 22-year-old Central Michigan University student from Holland, Kelly Markatos, was also found dead in her off-campus apartment last September 3; it was later determined that she may have succumbed to bulimia-related symptoms.
