U.S. House passes First Responders Act

WASHINGTON, D.C (WKZO) -- The U.S. House unanimously passed the “Protecting Volunteer Firefighters and Emergency Responders Act,” to ensure that emergency services volunteers are not counted as full-time employees under the Employer Mandate of the Affordable Care Act. The move shields fire departments from new health care costs, which would cause many to close their doors. Congresswoman Candice Miller of Michigan who cosponsored the bill says, communities across the country rely on the services these volunteers provide.

"Many of these departments are already stretching their limited resources for equipment, training and recruitment," says Miller, "and forcing them to comply with the employer mandate would have a crushing impact on the life-saving services they provide their local communities.”
