Michigan Supreme Court to decide on juvenile life sentences

LANSING (WKZO) --The state Supreme Court is hearing cases to determine whether juveniles sentenced to life in prison without parole will be retried. At issue is a newly signed state law that says that juvenile felons, tried as adults and convicted of first-degree-murder, may not be automatically sentenced to life without parole.

The court's ruling could have an effect on whether approximately 350-people who were convicted and sentenced under old guidelines will get new trials. Attorney General Bill Schuette says that the families of the victims were told that the killers would be put away forever.

"To break that promise now would be a cruel and unfair injustice to those families," Schuette told the Detroit Free Press.
