GRAND HAVEN TWP., MI (WHTC) - A suburban Chicago man who apparently thought that he could go throughout Michigan with impunity on a credit card scam got tripped up over the weekend due to some teamwork.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Captain Steve Kempker, the 59-year-old suspect from Park Forest came into a convenience store on Mercury Drive southeast of Grand Haven around 2:30 PM on Saturday afternoon, looking to purchase some pre-paid credit cards. Apparently the suspect was at the Wesco store in Spring Lake earlier, and the clerk there alerted colleagues at other outlets about the possibility that the man would visit their establishments.
After getting a good description of the suspect, the clerk notified authorities, and the man was arrested without incident in Grand Haven. US Secret Service agents were brought into the case, as the suspect is also believed to have attempted similar purchases using cloned credit cards at other retailers in Michigan.
The unnamed man is in the Ottawa County Jail awaiting arraignment in Grand Haven District Court.
