Six People Injured in Two-Car Collision South of GVSU's Main Campus

ALLENDALE, MI (WHTC) - Six persons were injured, three of which requred hospitalization, in a two-vehicle, head-on crash south of the GVSU Allendale campus yesterday morning.

According to Ottawa County Sheriff's Sergeant Jason Kik, 20-year-old Elizabeth Bellman of the downriver Detoit suburb of Lincoln Park was westbound on Fillmore Street when, near 42nd Avenue, her vehicle drifted over the center line. Erica Ellen Erway, a 19-year-old Cadillac woman who had four persons under age 18 in her vehicle, was headed in the opposite direction and attempted to swerve out of the oncoming vehicle's way but failed.

Bellman, who had to be extricated  and Erway were taken to Spectrum-Butterworth Hospital; one of Erway's passengers was also hospitalized, while the other three sought indpendent treatment. None of the injuries were considered life-threatening.

Kik said that alcohol was not a factor in the crash, but didn't say what led Bellman's vehicle to go across the center line. The crash came two days after a 17-year-old Walker man died in a head-on collision south of Marne; his cell phone was found on his lap, and it was determined that he had been texting while driving.
