CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (WHTC) - A 1986 Hope College graduate has scored an upset at the ballot box in Virginia.
Little-known college professor Dave Brat defeated US House Majority Leader Eric Cantor in the Republican Primary for the district that represents the University of Virginia area, and will face Jack Trammell in the November 4th General Election. Pundits say that Tea Party money helped Brat score the upset, as Cantor was seen as the next House Speaker if the GOP held onto its majority in the Lower Chamber.
Another Hope grad, Terry Lynn Land, is the presumptive Republican nominee for the US Senate seat in Michigan that Carl Levin is retiring from; she is expected to face Democrat Gary Peters in November. There hasn’t been a Hope College graduate on Capitol Hill since Pete Hoekstra stepped down after 18 years in 2010 for a failed gubernatorial bid.
