COMSTOCK PARK, MI (WHTC) - The Whitecaps welcome another Detroit Tiger into the fold.
The parent Detroit Tigers announced that outfielder Andy Dirks, who has missed the entire regular season while recovering from back surgery this spring, will begin a six-game rehab stint with West Michigan with tomorrow night's contest versus Fort Wayne at Fifth Third Ballpark. It will be the second stint with the Caps for Dirks, who played three games after being drafted out of Wichita State University in 2008 before suffering a hand injury; he was promoted to Lakeland the following spring.
This is the third Tiger to join the Caps for a brief rehab assignment this season, as pitchers Luke Putkonen and Ian Krol each pitched a game for West Michigan. Since Detroit took over for Oakland as the major league parent club for the Whitecaps 18 years ago, 16 Tigers have worn Whitecaps uniforms while recovering from injuries, including such notables as Jeremy Bonderman, Curtis Granderson, Carlos Guillen, Brandon Inge, Magglio Ordonez and Kenny Rogers.
