UNDATED (WHTC) -- A kayaker made a wrong turn and ended up lost in the fog on Lake Michigan this afternoon. The Ottawa County Marine Patrol was contacted by the 42-year-old man at about 1:30 P.M. Sgt. Cal Keuning said that the man had left the Holland pier heads headed south to Saugatuck when the fog began to thicken. The Marine Patrol deputy used his siren so the kayaker could hear him. The kaykaer had a whistle with him and the two found each other about two miles south of the Holland pier heads.
The kayaker was prepared with a life jacket, the whistle and his cellphone. The Sheriff’s Office has a message for those who travel by water: Be Safe. Check weather conditions, have a game plan and let someone know where you're going and what time you expect to be back.
