Tigers, Cubs Fall, White Sox and Whitecaps Get Wins

UNDATED (WHTC) -- The Tigers’ Justin Verlander had another tough outing Saturday night, giving up three runs on six hits and three walks across seven frames, losing 4-0.  Austin Jackson had two of Detroit's four hits in the loss.  Tigers’ manager Brad Ausmus was ejected in the third inning by home plate umpire Cory Blaser after Eugenio Suarez was ruled out on a pickoff attempt due to an Angels' challenge.  The Tigers go for the split this afternoon against the Angels with broadcast on 1450 WHTC getting underway at 3:10 P.M.

Nate Schierholtz and Ryan Sweeney hit solo homers for the Cubs in a 6-3 loss to the Cardinals Saturday afternoon.  Jake Arrieta gave up two runs on five hits with six strikeouts over the first six frames but James Russell was charged with the loss, giving up four runs on two hits.  The rubber match takes place this afternoon at Wrigley Field.

Chris Sale tied a season-high with 12 strikeouts and pitched eight shutout innings to lead the White Sox to a 7-0 win over the Minnesota Twins on Saturday.  Sale remained unbeaten in his last seven starts after giving up just five singles and two walks in the win.  The White Sox go for the sweep of the Twins this afternoon.

In the opener of a highly-anticipated three-game series between the Midwest League’s top two teams, the West Michigan Whitecaps landed the first blow with a 7-5 win over the Kane County Cougars on Saturday night in the Chicago suburbs.  Both teams are play-off bound due to first-half division championships in their respective Midwest League divisions.  Austin Kubitza worked around a leadoff double in the fifth and induced an inning-ending double play ball in the sixth to finish his outing strong.  The Whitecaps and Cougars go at it again this afternoon with broadcast on 1450 WHTC and whtc.com beginning at 1:50 P.M.
