UNDATED (WHTC) -- If you’re heading out to the Ottawa County Fair this week, be careful while using bug spray on kids. The Michigan Department of Agriculture & Rural Development sent out a press release reminding consumers about being cautious while using insect repellent. Heavy rains last month caused a substantial increase in mosquito activity and repellent can safely keep them away when used properly. MDARD advises consumers not to use repellent with DEET on infants less than two months old, not to spray repellent directly on a child and wash treated skin with soap and water once indoors. According to MDARD, repellents with low concentrations are effective when re-applied as needed. It also helps to avoid mosquitos during prime feeding hours of dusk and dawn.
