University of Michigan researchers warn of possible Mackinac Straits pipleine rupture disaster

ANN ARBOR (WKZO) -- "Unprecedented disaster" is how a National Wildlife Foundation official describes what would happen if the Enbridge Energy oil pipeline under the Straits of Mackinac were to rupture.

University of Michigan researchers are releasing a new simulation of what to expect in the event something goes tragically wrong with the 61-year-old line. Researcher David Schwab said that spot would be the "worst possible place for an oil spill in the Great Lakes."

Concerns have also been raised about the pipeline by Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette, Department of Environmental Quality Director Dan Wyant, and U.S. Senators Carl Levin, Debbie Stabenow and Dick Durbin.
