MARNE, MI (WHTC) - For the second time in a nearly two-week span, the stretch of I-96 in Ottawa County has seen a fatal head-on crash.
Deputies are awaiting to notify relatives of a man in his early 50's who was trapped and burned to death in his flaming minivan after it exploded when hit by a SUV apparently going full speed in the wrong direction. According to Ottawa County Sheriff's Captain Steve Kempker, Heather Luke was going westbound on I-96 near the 16th Avenue exit around 7:45 last night when she made a fateful decision, using an emergency path though the median to start driving westbound in the eastbound lanes, with the collision coming shortly thereafter. Deputies don't know at this point what led Luke to make such a move. The 32-year-old Marne woman was pinned for an hour and flown to Spectrum-Butterworth Hospital in critical condition; the other driver died instantly.
On June 28th, one person died and another was injured in a similar head-on crash along I-96 near Coopersville. Both crashes remain under investigation.
