Zeeland Lumber and Supply Company’s Wyoming location was severely damaged by a storm that ripped through Grand Rapids’ southwest suburbs late Sunday evening. The office of the company’s truss facility was destroyed and part of the roof collapsed on the attached production building. The wall panel production building on the same lot was not impacted by the storm. Trees on the landscape of the Clay Ave location were uprooted and a few of the company’s trucks had cracked windshields. Some employees were on the job when the storm hit, but nobody was injured. ZLSC said on their website that this will disrupt truss production temporarily and in the meantime will be moved to their location in Elkhart, IN. The National Weather Service later confirmed that the storm was an EF-1 tornado. The storm is believed to have started near the M-6 and U.S. 131 interchange and ended near Breton Road SE and 28th street. 7 people were injured in the storm and close to 15 houses may have been destroyed. The storm hit so quickly and severely that tornado sirens were not activated.
