Rail Car shortages impact economy

Sioux Falls, SD (KELO-AM) --Rail car shortages are contuning to cause problems for grain farmers and car dealerships across the Upper Midwest. The Federal Surface Transportation Board is now asking that the BNSF and Canadian Pacific rail Systems submit reports on rail car shortfalls. So far, North Dakota tops the list of impacted states.

BNSF Railway reported 4,942 past due rail cars in North Dakota averaging 32 days late. North Dakota had the most past-due rail cars followed by Montana, Minnesota, Washington and South Dakota.

BNSF promised in April to add more locomotives and crews in an effort to address the agriculture shipping delays. Some are blaming more lucrative shipments of oil from the midwest as the reason for the backup. Farmers have been impacted getting crops to market and processing, while some car dealers are reporting delays in shipment of new car orders.
