GRAND HAVEN, MI (WHTC) - Fire safety experts say that, during this Independence Day holiday season, most residents should leave the industrial-strength fireworks to the professionals. That also goes for attempting to make homemade fireworks, as a Grand Haven resident found out the hard way yesterday morning.
According to Grand Haven Public Safety, fire crews from three departments were called to a Columbus Avenue residence near Sixth Street around 11 AM on a report of a house fire. They saw flames coming from the second floor of the two-story house, spreading onto a couple of other roofs in the structure, before the blaze was brought under control. Damage was considered to be substantial, but no dollar amount was immediately given.
Investigators found that an unnamed resident was using black powder to make homemade fireworks when it exploded, sparking the fire and causing some burns to the victim. No other injuries were reported.
The matter remains under investigation, and the Ottawa County Prosecutors' Office will review the case to see if any criminal charges will be filed.
