LANSING (WKZO) -- Legislation is headed to the Michigan Senate to increase the penalties for those caught soliciting sex from minors.

The House overwhelmingly passed the bills Wednesday as part of an overall effort to fight human trafficking in Michigan.  Under the bills, the crime would go from a misdemeanor punishable by up to 93-days in jail to a felony with a five-year prison sentence.

The legislation came out of recommendations from the Michigan Human Trafficking Commission, recognizing their conclusion that minors are more prone to exploitation and need more protections under the law.
