KALAMAZOO, MI (WTVB) - You won’t be able to ice skate across Lake Michigan but it will be covered with more ice this year than most. At this time last year, 2% of Lake Michigan had frozen over. This year already 35% of the lake is covered in ice and they expect 62% of the big lake will freeze over before winter ends. It could mean an earlier end to winter in west Michigan, at least the snow according to Western Michigan University meteorologist Robert Ruhf. He says if it’s covered with ice, it can’t generate snow.
Right now it’s bad news for shipping firms that are blocked by the ice, but it will be good news for them in the spring. More ice means less evaporation and deeper water on the big lakes and that means they can haul more cargo.
