DETROIT (WKZO) -- The City of Detroit's two pension funds are continuing their efforts to get an expedited appeal of the recent approval of Chapter 9 Bankruptcy.

The General Retirement Fund and the Police and Fire Retirement Fund responded to the city's attempt to block an appeal Wednesday.  In a brief filed with the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati, lawyers for the pension fund say the city's attempt to prevent an appeal is "legally unjustified" and "breathtakingly unfair" to the thousands of workers who depend on their pensions.

City officials say they are optimistic that ongoing negotiations between the city and creditors could lead to a "con sensual plan" that would prevent deep cuts for pensioners.
