DNR officials warn residents of "winterkill"

DETROIT (WKZO) -- The harsh winter weather will likely take its toll on fish and other wildlife, according to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

The department is reminding residents they may see large amounts of dead fish and other wildlife once the heavy snow and ice melts.  It will be very likely in shallow lakes, streams and ponds.  They say the "winterkill" is common especially in extreme weather conditions.

DNR officials also say the overall health of wildlife and fishing quality will not be affected.
