PAW PAW, MI (WHTC) - A governmental storm is brewing south of the Lakeshore.
The Van Buren County Board of Commissioners have sent Sheriff Dale Gribler a scathing letter accusing him of misusing public funds and criticizing Cass County Prosecutor Victor Fitz for not bringing criminal charges as a result. The board claims that Gribler, who is nearly midway through his fifth four-year term as the county’s top lawman, used the county’s credit card for unauthorized personal use in 2013 to the tune of several thousand dollars, and the commissioners felt that he handled his department’s budget improperly. Fitz, who looked into the allegations as a special prosecutor, didn’t find any “criminal intent” on Gribler’s “bad judgment.”
By state law, the board can’t remove Gribler from office, and the Sheriff has refused public comment on the matter.
