Group submits language to get minimum wage hike on the November ballot in Michigan

LANSING, MI (WTVB) - A group seeking to increase the minimum wage in Michigan has submitted petition language to the Secretary of State’s office, with a goal of getting the question on the November ballot. “Raise Michigan” says if the language is approved, they will try to collect 350,000 signatures. They need 258,000 valid signatures to force a statewide vote.

The proposal would increase the minimum wage gradually over a year, hiking the state’s $7.40 cent minimum by 50-cents next January first, another 50-cents June 1st 2015 and $1.10 on January 1, 2016 raising it to $9.50 an hour. It would also increase minimum salaries for restaurant and bar employees who work for tips.

Business groups oppose the idea, saying it will raise costs, eliminate jobs and raise prices for consumers.
