Nearly Full Slate of Prep Roundball Along Lakeshore Tonight

UNDATED (WHTC) - In a high school basketball doubleheader last night at Black River Public School, the River Rats beat Heritage Christian in the girls’ opener, 58-23, but the visiting Eagles took the boys’ nightcap, 68-50. Black River’s boys are at West Michigan Lutheran this evening, while the girls’ team is the only one of the 20 varsity round ball squads in the Holland-Zeeland area to not be in action.

All of the other match ups are girls/boys doubleheaders. We’ll carry the Grandville at West Ottawa boys’ game on 1450 WHTC and http://whtc.com/listen-live, beginning at 7:25 PM. Other fixtures include Holland at Byron Center, Hamilton versus Holland Christian at the Holland Civic Center, Zeeland East at Muskegon, Unity Christian at Zeeland West, Saugatuck at Fennville, and Calvary Schools of Holland at Fruitport Calvary.

Grand Valley State split a basketball doubleheader with visiting Northern Michigan last night. Alyssa Colla scored 26 points as the Wildcats took the women’s opener, 61-59. The Lakers came back to win the men’s nightcap, 69-61, behind 20 points from Ricardo Carbajal. GVSU entertains Michigan Tech in another twin bill tomorrow afternoon.

In state major college basketball last night, Michigan State downed Penn State, 82-67, while Oakland lost to Cleveland State, 92-85. Detroit plays at Valparaiso this evening.

Gustav Nyquist’s goal with 6:38 left in the second period snapped a 1-1 tie, as the Red Wings won at Florida last night, 3-1. Detroit’s final game before the 17-day-long Olympic break is tomorrow evening in Tampa Bay, with broadcast time on 1450 WHTC at 6:40 PM.

The Chicago Blackhawks are in Phoenix to face the Coyotes this evening.
