LANSING (WKZO) -- The escape of an inmate from the Ionia Correctional Facility has Governor Rick Snyder's attention.
The governor and state Attorney General Bill Schuette have formally announced that the Department of the Attorney General will be leading the investigation into the recent escape of convicted murderer Michael Elliot on February 2nd. The Michigan Department of Corrections is already conducting an internal affairs investigation, and Snyder says the additional independent investigation is an extra step to make sure such an incident does not happen again.
Elliot was already serving a life sentence for multiple murders when he escaped, carjacking a woman and fleeing to Indian where he was apprehended the next day. He is currently fighting extradition back to Michigan to face expected charges related to his escape.
