Bubble players get one last chance tomorrow

(WNFL)- Jobs will be on the line tomorrow night when the Green Bay Packers close out their exhibition season by hosting Kansas City. At a news conference this morning, general manager Ted Thompson said players on the bubble can help themselves by coming up big against the Chiefs. The Packers have to make 22 roster cuts by 5 pm Saturday to get down to the NFL's regular season limit of 53. A year ago, safety Chris Banjo and receiver Jeremy Ross earned roster spots by playing strong in their preseason finale. Thompson mentions the story of receiver Desmond Howard -- who was injured for much of the 1996 preseason, but made the roster as a kick returner with a 77-yard touchdown return in his second exhibition game. Howard went on to become one of Green Bay's greatest punt and kickoff returners. After returning a kickoff for a TD in Super Bowl 31, Howard remains the only special teams player ever to win the game's MVP award.
