ALLEGAN, MI (WHTC) - At least two months in jail, 18 months of probation and fines were levied yesterday on Terry Burns. The one-time Allegan County Commissioner from Saugatuck pled guilty to an attempted embezzlement count in a deal with prosecutors that had additional charges dropped. Burns allegedly took several thousand dollars from a trust account for Joseph Migas, the former Mi Ro Golf Course owner that Burns was a legal guardian of. During the sentencing hearing, Burns told Allegan County Circuit Court Judge Kevin Cronin that the death of his daughter in a crash along I-94 near Marshall last year, along with a now-failed state House bid, led to him "borrowing" the money that he was working to pay back when Migas' girlfriend blew the whistle last fall.
Burns could have received up to five years in prison. A restitution hearing for Burns is slated for December 12th.
