West Nile virus identified in Oakland County

PONTIAC (WKZO) -- Health officials are reminding people to minimize exposure to mosquitoes after the West Nile Virus was identified in a bird in Oakland County.

Health Department spokeswoman Kathy Forzley says that at the end of summer mosquitoes are older and more likely to carry the virus. She reminds everyone to use an insect repellent that contains DEET or any other EPA-approved active ingredient.

Forzley also says it's a good idea to avoid shaded and wooded areas and to wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, socks, and shoes when outdoors. Additionally it's important, she says, to eliminate mosquito breeding sites around the home by emptying standing water where mosquitoes can lay eggs.
