Tigers, Cubs and Red Wings All Get Saturday Wins

UNDATED (WHTC) -- Victor Martinez's big day helped the Tigers grab a 5-2 victory over the Angels on Saturday at  Comerica Park.  Martinez got on base in all four at bats with two hits and two walks along with connecting for a solo homer.  Max Scherzer grabbed his first win striking out nine and allowing one run in seven innings.  The Tigers face the Angels this afternoon with broadcast beginning at 12:40 P.M. on 1450 WHTC and whtc.com

The Cubs used three home runs to power past the Reds 8-4 at Wrigley Field.  Mike Olt hit a solo homer, while Darwin Barney and Wellington Castillo each cracked two-run shots.  Emilio Bonifacio was 3-for-5 with two runs scored, while Edwin Jackson allowed two runs in five-and-two-thirds innings for his first win of the season.  The Cubs play the Reds this afternoon.

The White Sox fell to the Rangers 6-3 on Saturday at Globe Life Park.  Jose Quintana took the loss in his five innings of work, giving up five runs on nine hits.  The White Sox take on the Rangers in the third game of a weekend series this afternoon.


The White Caps were topped by the Cedar Rapids Kernels in extra innings on Saturday, losing in the 12th inning, 7-6.  The Whitecaps begin a home stand tomorrow against Bowling Green.


Jimmy Howard stopped all 25 shots he saw to send the Red Wings to a 1-0 win over the Bruins in Game One of their first round playoff series.  Pavel Datsyuk lit the lamp with just over three minutes to play for Detroit, which is the second wild card team from the Eastern Conference.  Boston hosts Game Two this afternoon.

The Blackhawks are down 2-zip in their series against the St Louis Blues, losing on Saturday, 4-3.  Game Three is in Chicago on Monday.

The fourth-seeded Griffins begin the defense of their 2013 Calder Cup championship by playing the fifth-seeded Abbotsford Heat in the best-of-five Western Conference Quarterfinals. Grand Rapids will visit the Abbotsford Entertainment & Sports Centre on Friday and Saturday before returning to Van Andel Arena on Wednesday, April 30th.


The Bulls begin their run at a NBA Championship this evening, welcoming the Washington Wizards to the United Center.  The Bulls grabbed the fourth seed after losing out on the No. 3 spot to the Toronto Raptors, while the Wizards squared away the fifth seed in the East.
