MARTIN, MI (WHTC) - Residents of a small eastern Allegan County community came together last night to remember one of their own.
Jaryd Ford had moved south to Plainwell, but the 2011 graduate of Martin High School had been a “friend to everybody” and was working to become a plumber when he was driving his friend Megan Covey on his sports car southbound on US-131 late on Tuesday night. The 21-year-old man couldn’t avoid a speeding pickup truck heading the wrong way and collided with his vehicle head on, causing a fiery crash. Ford was killed instantly, while the other driver, 29-year-old Jeremy Smeltzer of Portage, died at Bronson Hospital; the 26-year-old Covey of Wayland could be released from Bronson as early as today after treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
Investigators are awaiting results of an autopsy and toxicology tests before determining what led to the crash. Visitation for Ford is today, with a service tomorrow, as the Winkel Funeral Home in Otsego; arrangements for Smeltzer were incomplete as this day began.
