HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) - A new symbol of Holland's diversity could greet those coming in from the North Side, as a privately-funded, 350 thousand-dollar project was unveiled yesterday that would rename the River Avenue Bridge "Unity Bridge," with a 36-foot-high "Uniting Sun" steel sculpture built at the junction of River and Pine Avenues at the southern foot of the bridge. The renovation of the bridge eight years ago was the spark that led various community leaders to seek a symbol of the area’s growing ethnic culture while promoting inclusiveness and hospitality. Signs of the name change, along with 14 five-foot diameter “Sun Discs” entitled “New Dawn Rising” at each lamp post, are also part of the initiative, which needs approval from the Holland City Council, the Holland Township Board, and the Ottawa County Road Commission. Organizers are hopeful of having the changes in place by Labor Day.
