Pork prices rise as virus affects swine herds

ALLEGAN COUNTY, MI (WTVB) - The PED virus has been confirmed on over 90 farms around the state and in Southwest Michigan it’s being blamed for killing thousands of pigs at one Allegan County farm.  Dennis Deyoung says it happened quickly, and adds that once the animal gets sick, it will be dehydrated so badly from diarrhea that it's very difficult to reverse. He says the virus came from China, where they have had it for a while, but it’s new here.

There is no vaccine for the disease, but Deyoung says older animals can normally survive while piglets get killed off. He has intentionally infected his entire swine population to try to build up an immunity, and is not allowing any animals on his property until that happens. While people cannot contract the disease, it will affect humans as Deyoung says pork prices will rise in Michigan and around the nation due to a short supply.
