LANSING (WKZO) -- A state of disaster is now in effect for Newaygo and Osceola counties due to flooding from the Muskegon River, severe storms and heavy rainfall.

Governor Snyder issued the declaration to make all state resources available for the counties. More than 400 homes in Newaygo County have been damaged by floodwaters from the Muskegon River, and it could be more than a week before those residents are allowed to return home.

Damage assessment teams hope to be able to get to those houses early next week.
