JACKSON, MI (WTVB) - The Michigan Department of Corrections says state prison inmate and convicted cop-killer Eric Knysz is officially dead. D-O-C officials say doctors completed their work, harvesting his organs for transplant and took him off life-support mid-morning Thursday. Family members say most people may never get beyond the fact that he shot and killed State Trooper Paul Butterfield last fall, but they say they hope it at least makes him seem more human.
Knysz tried to commit suicide at the Jackson Correctional Facility earlier this week by hanging himself and only partially succeeded, leaving his body still alive on a ventilator. The organization that matches donors and recipients never divulges where they come from or who they go to, even to those directly involved or their families.
