PLAINWELL, MI (WHTC) - Two people are dead following a crash on US-131 south of Plainwell last night.
State Police say that the pickup of 29-year-old Jeremy Smeltzer of Portage was northbound in the southbound lanes out of Kalamazoo County, traveling at speeds of up to 100 miles per hour. Troopers attempting to intercept the vehicle had their beacon lights on when the truck approached just south of the M-89 interchange, and the police vehicles swerved to avoid a collision. The pickup then slammed head-on into a car trailing the troopers, causing it and the car to burst into flames.
Smelzer and the other driver, 21-year-old Jaryd Ford of Plainwell, were killed instantly; a passenger in the car, 26-year-old Megan Covey of Wayland, was taken to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo for treatment of injuries and is expected to recover. The highway was closed for several hours overnight as the incident remains under investigation.
