Schauer unveils education priorities

BATTLE CREEK (WKZO) -- Democratic candidate for governor Mark Schauer has unveiled his plan for improving education in Michigan. The former Battle Creek Congressman has long held that education would be a top priority in his administration if elected, and under his plan the state would undo recent cuts to classroom funding, lay the framework for universal pre-school in the state, and set standards on the maximum number of students per classroom.

A press release from his campaign also says his further proposals would restrict use of the state's School Aid Fund to K-12 and pre-school purposes only, make charter schools more transparent, and create ways for parents and guardians to better compare performance between schools. Still other plans would include investments in training for teachers, expanding opportunities for technical training, and reversing cuts to higher education.
