ALLEGAN, MI (WHTC) - Remorse before sentencing apparently didn’t sway Allegan County Circuit Court Judge Margaret Bakker.
She sentenced Tobias Westenbroek to serve as much as 20 years in prison yesterday. The 38-year-old Holland area man pleaded no contest to assault and home invasion charges stemming from an incident on August 26, 2012, when he allegedly broke into the Saugatuck Township home where his estranged wife was at. Prosecutors claimed that he took a piece of broken glass, using it to slash and stab both her and another man several times before fleeing. Both victims recovered from their wounds, while Westenbroek was a fugitive until captured at a motorcycle rally in South Dakota nearly a year later.
Westenbroek apologized for his actions in the courtroom, contrary to what was in a pre-sentencing report, and Judge Bakker also took into account a 1997 domestic violence conviction on his record when she handed down her sentence.
