LAWTON, MI (WHTC) - The next state Senator to represent Allegan County may be from Lawton, no matter what.
Businessman Jim Walters announced his candidacy for the Democratic Party nomination, saying that he was asked by party leaders to make a run for the newly created seat in the Upper Chamber. He is currently the President of the Board of Directors of non-profit organizations Open Doors Kalamazoo, which works to find homes for low-income workers and families, and the Center for transformation, which focuses on helping ex-criminals re-enter communities as responsible citizens. In a press release, Walters states that his focus, if elected, would be on supporting public education, raising the state's minimum wage, protecting the environment, and women's rights regarding health care.
He is expected to challenge incumbent Tonya Schuitmaker (R-Lawton) for the spot that is being vacated by Rick Jones (R-Grand Ledge) due to census-spurred redistricting. it is not expected that either Walters or Schuitmaker will get much of a challenge in the August 5 primary election before squaring off in the November 4 general election.
