EASTMANVILLE, MI (WHTC) - It was the nautical equivalent of pulling a false alarm in a building as Ottawa County authorities are taking a dim view of a mayday call yesterday afternoon.
According to Sheriff’s Sergeant Matt Wildfong, such a call came to the Coast Guard station in Grand Haven just before 4 PM from a boater who claimed that he was in trouble along the Grand River between 48th and 68th Avenue in Eastmanville. The Coast Guard sent a helicopter down from its Traverse City base, while the Sheriff’s department had its marine unit out, as well as deputies searching from shore. However, no trace of any boat was found in that area, and those fishing from the river’s banks also said that they never saw any vessel come past them.
No suspect is in custody as the incident remains under investigation.
