GRAND RAPIDS (WKZO) -- A federal judge in Grand Rapids says mandatory minimum sentences are a "waste" of taxpayer money. U.S. District Court Judge Robert Holmes Bell wrote in a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee that mandatory minimum sentences produce "unjust results." Senators Patrick Leahy and Rand Paul who are members of that committee are co-sponsoring a bill designed to give judges like Bell more flexibility when imposing lighter sentences in some federal crime cases.
