HAMTRAMCK (WKZO) -- Three people, including a candidate, are facing felony charges after an investigation into election law violations in Hamtramck.

City council candidate Armani Asad, campaign worker Salim Ahmed and Mohammad Russell have been charged with unlawfully possessing and returning absentee ballots in the August primary election.  Hamtramck police began an investigation into reports of a high number of absentee ballots turned in, and the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office and Michigan Secretary of State referred the case to Attorney General Bill Schuette's office.

In a statement announcing the charges, Schuette said preserving the integrity of the voting process is vital and his office will not tolerate violations of election law.
