MANISTEE, MI (WTVB) - It was a day of emotion and tears as funeral services were held Saturday in Manistee for slain Michigan State Trooper Paul Butterfield. The veteran officer was shot and killed a week ago today during what he thought was a routine traffic stop. Over 1,000 police officers from all over the state and nation attended the services. Governor Rick Snyder spoke of Trooper Butterfield, reflecting how he live a life of service and a loving, compassionate great friend to many.

Michigan State Police Director Colonel Kriste Kibbey Etue said she was on her way to Munson Hospital the night he was shot when she heard he had died, and she said it left her heartbroken. She said she doesn’t know what motivates such people to commit these violent crimes and evil acts, noting the tragedy is so difficult to comprehend. Regardless, Etue said there will be justice for those responsible for his death.

Blue balloons were released at a candlelight vigil held Saturday night in Ludington. Butterfield was 43.
