LANSING (WKZO) -- The latest poll numbers from Marketing Resource Group and Mitchell Research and Communications finds that former Secretary of State and Republican candidate Terri Lynn Land with 40-percent of support from likely voters, while her expected Democratic opponent, Congressman Gary Peters, carries 39-percent.  Breaking down the numbers by region, pollsters found that Land had more support with greater name recognition in west Michigan, while Peters had more on the east side of the state, with the two regions being the candidates' respective homes.

Another poll conducted by Public Policy Polling found that Peters leads Land 43-percent to 36-percent, a lead that swells to 50-percent to 36-percent when voters are informed Peters was against the federal government shutdown.  Neither candidate has any expected primary challengers in the race to fill the seat being vacated by retiring Senator Carl Levin.
