HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) -- Production has begun at the LG Chem plant in Holland and the first shipment of lithium ion batteries were sent to a Chevrolet assembly plant in Brownstown, Michigan. Production has been a series of stops and starts since spring of 2012. In February of this year, the U.S. Auditor General requested that LG Chem repay 842-thousand dollars after finding that the money was used to pay workers who weren’t actually manufacturing batteries. Employees were on the job but being paid to play cards, watch movies and volunteer for local charities while on company time. Earlier in November, paid another fine of 1.2-million dollars to the federal government for using federal funds to pay idled workers.
