HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) -- A West Ottawa Public school is benefitting from funds raised by the Hope College Mortar Board. Woodside Elementary was presented with a check for 12-thousand-four-hundred-twenty dollars on this past Friday. The Mortar Board is a national honor society for outstanding college seniors. They raise funds and books each year through alumni donations and a Homecoming Book Drive. The staff at Woodside is working to increase students test scores but needed additional high quality books written for all levels of readers. Principal Nicholas Holtvluwern said, “We plan on using these funds to support our school-wide Baggie Book program, enhancing classroom libraries and adding high-quality, high interest texts to our school library.” More than 84 percent of Woodside Elementary students qualified for free and reduced lunches last year and for more than a third of the students, English is a second language.
