WATCH: Bob Genetski Takes on Issue that State Civil Rights Department Officials Didn't Last Night

by

HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) - During a Friday morning appearance on WHTC's "Talk of the Town" program, state House Rep. Bob Genetski (R-Saugatuck) discussed why he is co-sponsoring legislation that would strip the state Department of Civil Rights of three million dollars to pay for school districts that would be forced to change its athletic teams' nicknames, logos and mascots. The DCR has filed a complaint with the US Department of Education, asking that federal funding be withheld from Saugatuck and 34 other districts who has those nicknames, logos and mascots that the DCR deems offensive to Native Americans; Genetski and others in Lansing are upset that the department made this decision "autocratically" without input from the districts involved or the public. DCR official John Golaszewski, in Holland on Thursday night for a panel discussion on civil rights in general, was not asked about this situation by the audience in Holland City Hall, nor volunteered any opinion on this matter.
