UNDATED (WHTC) - Michigan and Michigan State both hit the court tonight in hopes of moving one step closer to college basketball’s Holy Grail – the Final Four. The Wolverines take on Kansas in one regional semifinal in Arlington, Texas, while the Spartans face Duke in another regional semi in Indianapolis.
In the NBA….the Pistons host Toronto tonight at the Palace…The Bulls are off until Saturday when they play the Mavericks in Dallas.
In the NHL…Antti Niemi turned away 27 shots to become the first goalie in San Jose Sharks history to record back-to-back shutouts on consecutive nights as the Sharks blanked the Detroit Red Wings 2-0 on the West Coast. The loss snapped Detroit’s three-game winning streak. The Wings come home to face the Blackhawks in a nationally-televised contest Easter Sunday. Chicago, meanwhile, hosts Anaheim tonight at the United Center.
In the American Hockey League…the Griffins continue their recent struggles as they fell to San Antonio 4-1 last night. That’s five losses in the last six games for Grand Rapids. The Griffins take on the Aeros tonight in Houston.
In baseball…the Detroit Tigers will open the 2013 season without an assigned closer. The Tigers yesterday sent Bruce Rondon (ron-DONE), whom they had penciled in to replace Jose Valverde as the closer, down to Toledo to work on his control. Detroit will open the season with a combination of left-hander Phil Coke and right-hander Octavio Dotel to close out games. The Tigers wrap up the home portion of their spring training this afternoon against Tampa Bay at Marchant Stadium. Yesterday, Anibal Sanchez was hammered for nine runs in five innings in a 11-4 loss to Houston. You can hear Tiger baseball today at 1 o’clock on 1450 WHTC.
